What do you want to be when you grow up? If you ask a child this in the 21st century, they might answer with the classic teacher, doctor, or professional athlete. You might even hear jobs like an astronomer, engineer, or business owner. While these are common jobs of the present, traveling back thousands of years would find you in Biblical times, where there were few types of jobs. Can you match the people of the Bible to their job?

Prostitution is often considered the world's oldest profession, but not if you take a look at the Bible. In Genesis, you're introduced to Adam and Eve. The first couple, they went on to have two children, Cain and Abel. Throughout this first book of the Old Testament, the first jobs you hear about are farmers and shepherds. While these two professions might be the most seen in the Bible, there are a few more that are added as history unfolds. 

Central people at the foundation of Judaism and Christianity held jobs such as hunters, doctors, and tentmakers. You'd find your kings, queens, and judges. There were even cupbearers, tax-collectors, and merchants. From central pillars of the faith, like Jesus to Abraham, can you match these people to their profession? Let's find out!

Abraham

Abraham is a central person in the Old Testament. At 100 years old, he and his wife, Sarah, were able to conceive a child, Isaac. Abraham proved his faithfulness to the Lord when he was asked to sacrifice Isaac. He was stopped before he went through with it.

Esau

Esau is Isaac's oldest son as well as Abraham's grandson. He was also the brother of Jacob, and Isaac's preferred son.

Joseph

Joseph was Mary's husband and Jesus' stepfather. He worked as a carpenter.

Nimrod

Nimrod was Noah's great-grandson. He was known as "a mighty hunter before the Lord."

Deborah

In the book of Judges, these people were the political leaders who judged Israel. Deborah is the only female judge mentioned in the Bible.

Luke, one of the four Gospel writers, was a physician before turning his life over to Jesus.

David

David is one of the people mentioned in the Bible who had numerous professions. In his free time, David could be considered a musician. He caught Saul's attention by playing the harp.

Andrew

Andrew was Simon Peter's brother. He was a fisherman, one of the apostles who Jesus promised to make "fishers of men."

Uriah

Uriah was a member of King David's army. After King David had an affair with his wife, Bathsheba, David ordered Uriah to go home to cover up her pregnancy. When he refused, David set him up to die in battle.

After catching the attention of Saul as a musician, the book of Samuel shows David working as an armorbearer to Saul, someone who carries a soldier's armor.

Cornelius

Cornelius is mentioned during the Acts of the Apostles. He worked as a centurion, a high role in the Roman army.

Jesus

Before Jesus began his ministry, he worked as a carpenter. It is common for sons to take the job of their fathers, and Jesus did this by taking the profession of his stepfather, Joseph.

Boaz is found in the Book of Ruth. He was Ruth's husband and a barley farmer.

Nehemiah worked as a cupbearer before becoming the governor of Judah.

Often called Simon Peter, he was one of the first apostles. As a fisherman alongside his brother, Andrew, Jesus promised to make them "fishers of men." Peter would become the first Bishop of Rome (Pope).

Felix is found in Acts 24 and he was a Roman governor and Drusilla's husband.

Elijah was a prophet during Ahab and Jezebel's reign. He challenged the prophets of Baal to test the powers of their god against his God.

Zacchaeus appears in the gospel of Luke. He is a tax collector in Jericho. After cheating the poor, he vows to return their money and half of his possessions to them.

Lydia was a merchant who appears in the Acts of the Apostles. She sold purple, an expensive type of cloth.

Paul is an apostle known for his epistles, or letters. Before dedicating his life to Jesus' ministry, he worked as a tentmaker.

Alexander is a person who Paul mentions in Timothy. As a coppersmith, Paul says that Alexander did a lot of damage to his ministry.

Moses is introduced in Exodus. The adopted son of the Egyptian princess, he would lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

One of David's numerous occupations, he worked as a shepherd. He did this prior to working for Saul as an armorbearer.

Abel was the second-born son of Adam and Eve. He was a shepherd.

Jacob was the son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham. He was a shepherd.

Cain was the firstborn son of Adam and Eve and older brother of Abel. He was a farmer.

Eliezer was Abraham's servant. Although it is not explicitly mentioned, it has been interpreted that be might have been the servant Abraham sent to find a wife for his son, Isaac.

Hagar was Ishmael's mother. Ishamael was a child she had with Abraham. She worked as a maidservant.

Zechariah was a priest from the Levi tribe. He is well known as the father of John the Baptist.

Aquila and his wife, Priscilla, were from Italy. They met Paul along their journey out of Italy and Paul stayed with them. He was a tentmaker just like Aquila.

Noah is well known for the story of the flood. After the flood, Noah planted his own vineyard and would often get drunk off the wine.
