In 1953, the first Chevy Corvettes rolled off the assembly line, wowing everyone with sleek and forward-thinking design. The only thing people really complained about was that the engine seemed a little underpowered for an "America's sports car." That issue was later fixed by Chevrolet, with V-8s joining the mix.

On some hoods, there is an air scoop that's part of the hood, but that's not the case with shakers. Instead, the air scoop attached to the engine protrudes through a cutout in the hood. When the engine is running, this section of what appears to be the hood is vibrating or shaking, hence the name.

The Model X came out in 1926, when the brand was riding high as one of the most sought-after automobiles in the world. Most people only remember that the Ford Probe was originally supposed to be the new Mustang. What they forget is that it was based on the Mazda G-platform, and even shared things like the headlights and instrument panel with the RX-7. The big secret that wasn't really a secret at all was that the Eagle Summit was actually a Mitsubishi RVR with some cosmetic and light mechanical differences. Chrysler and Mitsubishi had been creating similar vehicles for some time, not even bothering to swap out the engine cover.

At the time, this 5.4-liter V-8 was monumentally powerful, putting 540 horsepower the drivers' hands . Of course, thanks to new models like the Dodge Demon, that peak output seems a little on the weak side today, something Ford wants to correct for the 2020 model.

Just looking at this exceptionally rare vehicle, you can tell it's something special. The long hood hints at a big engine, which is exactly what's lurking under there. With only five ever made, nobody really wants to test out what one of these cars will do on a track.

Chevy engineered the IROC-Z to be the premier version of the Camaro, eclipsing performance you could get from the Z/28 back then. That V-8 stuffed under the hood pelted out a measly 215 horsepower, although some IROC-Z fans claim that number was grossly underrated by GM on purpose.

The first Nash Motors Ambassador launched in 1927 with a 4.6-liter OHV inline 6-cylinder rated at 78 horsepower, which was a healthy figure for the time. If you've heard the GT350 rev, you know the car sounds like an exotic vehicle, thanks to the flat-plane crank. Most V-8 engines have a cross-plane crank. Because the flat-plane crank generates more vibrations in the engine, the exhaust note is more shrill, making the GT350 sound different.

With 645 horsepower on tap from the massive 8.4-liter V-10, the Dodge Viper needs impressive handling to match. That giant "X" brace over the engine helps keep the wheels firmly planted on the road, so you avoid negative qualities like wheel hop.

Dodge says it put in 25 major part upgrades in the Demon to make it more powerful than the Hellcat V-8, with amazing results. At the time it was released, this was the most powerful production car ever, putting out 840 horsepower at its peak.
