The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk was the first American aircraft to utilize stealth technology. It entered service in 1983 but was only made public in 1988. This six-wheeled driven vehicle is used for route clearance and the movement of debris off roads, paths, etc. It is also able to withstand blasts from mines and other forms of explosions, which may cripple the vehicle but will keep occupants safe. The Buffalo has a 30ft robotic arm which is employed to clear routes without the occupants of the vehicle needing to disembark.

This vehicle is used to recover and rescue stranded vehicles on the battlefield. The M88A2 Hercules (which stands for heavy equipment recovery combat utility lift and evacuation system) performs its duties mostly by using a winch or towing stranded vehicles. It is so powerful that it can even winch the M1 Abrams tank, which weighs around 62 tons, while repairs can also be carried out on other stranded vehicles.

In service in the United States Army, the M9 Armored Combat Earthmover, or ACE, is a bulldozer, primarily used to dig trenches. It first entered service in 1986 and saw action during the first Persian Gulf War in 1991, playing a vital role in removing vehicle blockades.

Used by the United States Special Forces, the Lightweight Tactical All Terrain Vehicle (LTATV) carries two crew in a side by side configuration. It has a number of advantages. It is easily transported, highly maneuverable, has four wheel drive and capable of handling a range of terrains. A slightly larger version, which carries four crew is also available. Armament wise, the LTATV has both machine gun and grenade launcher hard points. This vehicle has been used extensively in Afghanistan and Iraq.

A Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, the Cougar carries 2 crew and 4 troops across a range of terrains. The vehicle was specifically designed to counter terrorist tactics of using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

PT Boats were used by the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. They were quick and maneuverable, carrying both machine guns and torpedoes as armament. PT Boats were built out of wood, making them cheap to manufacture. Interestingly, John F Kennedy commanded one of these boats -- PT 109 -- when he served during the war.

Named after former Army Chief of Staff General Creighton W. Abrams, the M1 entered service in 1979 and is still in production today. It has a maximum speed of 42 mph and a range of 265 miles. Armament comes in the form of a 105mm rifled main gun as well as three machine guns of varying calibers.

A battle tank in the British Army, the Challenger 2 entered service in 1994. Considered one of the toughest tanks in the world, the Challenger 2 has a range of armor options to protect it from a direct hit, including Chobham composite armor. Armament comes in the form of a 120 mm rifled main gun capable of firing armor piercing rounds accurately over 3 km. In fact, a Challenger 2 has the record for the longest tank kill ever recorded - a hit at over 4 km achieved during the First Gulf War.

Helicopter carriers differ for naval forces around the world. The United States does not have a pure helicopter carrier in service. The Wasp Amphibious Class, for instance, carries not only helicopters but also AV8 Harrier aircraft. These use vertical take-off and landing systems and so do function in the same way as a helicopter, however. Helicopter carriers were used extensively by the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

A Chinese Battle Tank introduced in service in 1997, the Type 96 is operated by a crew of three. Tarawa Class Amphibious ships entered service in 1976. They combined the duties of four other ships types into one. These included a helicopter carrier, an amphibious transport dock, command ship and amphibious cargo ship. Although smaller than the new Wasp Class, the Tarawa Class can carry a squadron of AV8 Harrier aircraft, helicopters, 200 armored vehicles and 1,900 troops. They were decommissioned in 2015.

It quickly became apparent that the need for Mine Resistant Ambush Resistant Vehicles (MRAP) was paramount in overseas theaters of conflict in the war against terror. The BAe Caiman is another vehicle that provides these capabilities. This multi-terrain vehicle performs a variety of roles, including troop transport for up to 10 soldiers, battlefield ambulance as well as a mobile command center. Over 56 000 have been produced.

The Stridsvagn 122 is basically the German Leopard II tank with a few changes specifically made for the needs of the Swedish Army. The Sukhoi Su-25, codenamed 'Frogfoot' by NATO, is a close air support attack aircraft that entered service in 1981. This aircraft has seen extensive combat both in Afghanistan in the 1980's and, more recently, Chechnya. In 2013, the Su-25SM3 Grach was introduced. It is a substantial upgrade from previous versions of the 'Frogfoot.' Around 80 of them will be delivered to the Russian Air Force.

The Ural Typhoon is a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle produced in Russia. It has 6 wheel drive, houses three crew and has the ability to transport 16 other soldiers. Armament comes in the form of either 7.62mm or 14.5mm machine gun. This is remotely controlled from inside the vehicle, offering further protection for its occupants. The Typhoon has a top speed of 65 mph.
